~*~ Hello and welcome to the Textile Trunk! Please follow us on Instagram @textiletrunk ~*~ This is a fantastic vintage men's or women's American girdle or "health belt" dating to around the 1940s. The Nulife company sold these "scientific posture correcting garments" to both men and women as devices to support their backs and abdominal muscles and to encourage better breathing! This particular style was meant to be easier to wear than normal corsets as the laces in the back of the brace are tightened when you cinch the belt, which was easier than tightening the laces manually. This would have been worn around the waist as a belt; you would cinch it around your waist and close it using the hook and eyes and then cinch the belt to tighten it fully. The boning is made of metal. This textile is made of white cotton and has the "Nulife" tag still intact and attached! A marvelous find that would be perfect for a costume, for display, a theater prop or costume, or for design inspiration! MEASUREMENTS: This girdle unclasped measures approximately 37 inches wide, by 7-10 inches long. When clasped but not tightened, measured flat it is approximately 18 inches wide. CONDITION : I've left this textile in unwashed, as found condition for collectors, but this can be hand washed and hung to dry. There are a few tiny marks on this piece that may not wash; a few of them likely are rust marks from the metal boning. It still has all of its hooks and eyes intact, and the laces are also in good condition and intact! There is a place where the fabric is coming away from the boning a tiny bit; in another few spots, the ends of the metal ribs are poking out (there are a few beautiful patched places where someone reinforced the edge and mended the places where the boning was beginning to poke through)! The end of the belt is beginning to fray a tiny bit. Overall, this piece is in wonderful condition for this type of antique textile!
